Cassidy Barrios crowned with Southland season’s final Player of the Week Honor

Colonels’ guard has historic week to close out regular-season campaign

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Cassidy Barrios is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Sunday. All Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.

Barrios concluded her final regular-season week in compelling fashion, helping the Colonels to an 89-67 win over Northwestern State on Wednesday and a 72-55 victory Saturday over Southeastern Louisiana. The Raceland, La., native tacked on a pair of double-doubles for the week bringing her season total to 19. She also set a Nicholls single-season scoring record after a 25-point outing against SLU.

The Colonels finished the regular-season with a 20-10 overall record and a 14-4 mark in conference play.

Senior Cassidy Barrios closed out the regular season with a pair of 25-point double-doubles while shooting an impressive 66.7 percent from the field as the Colonels extended their winning streak to seven games. She needed just 24 attempts to score 50 points, as 14 shots came from behind the 3-point line for a 57-percent clip.

Along with averaging 25.0 points and 10.5 rebounds, Barrios also chipped in with 4.5 assists per game while adding four steals and two blocks.

Her final game in Stopher Gym turned out to be a historic day as she led Nicholls to its first 20-win season in school history, its most Southland wins (14), and she also set the program single-season scoring record with 620 points. The senior also eclipsed 1,000 career rebounds. Her 19 double-doubles leads the Southland and ranks 11th in the NCAA.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
