NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men’s basketball freshman Caleb Daniels has been named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office Monday.

Daniels is the first Green Wave player to receive the honor this season, as Ray Ona Embo garnered the recognition twice during his debut campaign last year.

The New Orleans native and St. Augustine High School product averaged 12 points and three assists per game off the bench, while shooting 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range in a 1-1 week for the Green Wave. Daniels scored 10 of his 11 points at No. 13/12 Wichita State in the first half of Wednesday’s 93-86 setback, going 4 of 8 from the field and 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. He followed up that performance with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting, four rebounds and two steals off the bench in the 79-68 win at USF on Saturday.

Daniels has scored in double-figures as a reserve in four straight games and five of the last six. During the last half dozen games, he is averaging 11.8 points and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 20 of 39 (.513) overall, including 8 of 17 (.471) beyond the 3-point line.

Tulane hosts 10th-ranked Cincinnati for Senior Night on Thursday, March 1 at 8 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
