‘Cakes rally to take opener at Missions in 10
SAN ANTONIO – The New Orleans Baby Cakes scored a pair of 10th inning runs in a come from behind win over the San Antonio Missions to open a series Thursday night.
New Orleans, winners of three in a row, handed the Missions their seventh consecutive defeat despite the fact San Antonio sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning and scored a pair of runs. David Freitas and Tyrone Taylor each had an RBI before ‘Cakes starter Nick Neidert worked out of the inning with the bases loaded.
New Orleans answered with Yadiel Rivera’s three run home run in the second inning to take a 3-2 advantage.
The pitchers settled down and neither team scored until the eighth inning when Taylor hammered a solo home run to tie the game.
In the 10th, the ‘Cakes Magneuris Sierra drilled a line drive off the pitcher Angel Perdomo, who picked up the ball and threw it over the first baseman allowing the designated runner to score. Sierra, who advanced to third base on the error, scored on a double from Eddy Alvarez.
Brett Graves earned the win in relief.
The ‘Cakes improved to a season-high 12 games over .500 with their sixth consecutive road victory. New Orleans is 66-54 and 6 ½ games back of Round Rock in their division.
GAME NOTES – The ‘Cakes improved to 4-8 in extra innings, 35-25 in road games and 21-10 in series openers.
UPCOMING – The ‘Cakes continue their short road-trip on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Missions.
