Breaking a three-game losing streak in the annual rivalry, Byrd defeated Haughton on Thursday evening at Lee Hedges Stadium, 28-10.

William Berry scored the first two of four rushing touchdowns by the Yellow Jackets. The solid Byrd defense was led by a big night from Chris Greider, who corralled three interceptions.

“The defense was lights out,” said Byrd head coach Mike Suggs.

Although Haughton got on the scoreboard first with a 39yard field goal from Carter Jensen midway through the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets kept the Buccaneers from scoring again until late in the fourth quarter after the outcome had been decided.

Byrd took the lead for good with a 60-yard touchdown run from Berry on their next possession less than two minutes after falling behind.

Berry added an 11-yard scoring run just before halftime to make it 14-3.

The Jackets methodically sealed the deal in the second half, adding to their lead on scoring runs of four yards by Mitchell Ramsey early in the second half and eight yards by Jason Little with 9:25 left in the game.

Haughton managed to find the end zone with 2:38 to go on a 23-yard pass from Colin Rains to Elijah Rochon

In a pair of Friday matchups next week, Byrd (2-0) will travel to Natchitoches Central while Haughton (1-1) visits Benton.
