SHREVEPORT – Opening the season on its homefield, C.E. Byrd battled through a rainstorm but it was visiting Pleasant Grove (Texas) who left all wet.

The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 34-7 victory on soggy Friday night at Lee Hedges Stadium.

After a scoreless first quaretr, Byrd took a lead they never relinquished courtesy of a one-yard touchdown run from Dixon Poirier with 4:26 left in the second quarter.

The Jackets found their legs on offense from there.

Poirier hit paydirt again right before the half with a 18-yard run to make it 14-0.

Byrd took to the air for their next score after the half. Lake Lambert hit Jackson Dufrene on a 32-yard touchdown pass with 7:24 remaining in the third quarter to lead 21-0.

Dufrene made another big scoring play, this time on the ground. His 49-yard run gave the JAckets a 27-0 heading to the fourth quarter.

Pleasant Grove was shut down all night by the Byrd defense but avoided the shutout thanks to 23-yard fumble return by Kaden McFadden with 9:10 to go in the game.

Byrd put the icing on the cake of their opening week win via a six-yard run from Devon Strickland.

Despite challenging conditions and foe, it was a pleasing effort for the Jackets. “Pleasant Grove has great program,” stressed Byrd head coach Stacy Ballew.

Byrd (1-0) will play Huntington next Friday night while Pleasant Grove hosts Midland Christian.
