Byrd defeated Tioga, 18-3, during the first game Friday of the Battle on the Border inside Independence Stadium.

After a sluggish first quarter, Byrd found pay dirt with one-yard run from Mitch Ramsey early in the second quarter.

Tioga’s only points of the night came on a 27-yard field goal from Ben Doughty with 6:39 to go in the half.

The Yellow Jackets dominated a methodical second half with short touchdown runs in each quarter by Tyler Nichols.

“We didn’t play as well as we should have and that we were sloppy,“ said an unsatisfied first-year head coach Stacey Ballew.

Byrd (2-0) will play Maumelle of Arkansas (1-2), and Tioga (0-2) will face Pineville (1-1) next week.
