The four participants in sudden death with Judy Mackel -- L to R Jacob Bergeron,Champion Buck Williams, Judy Mackel, Scott Sterbcow and Chris Donaldson

The Mackel presented by Cox – The New Orleans Amateur Golf Championship was for the taking on a perfect weather weekend at Lakewood Golf Club. Another championship made history with four players tied after the 36 hole regulation play at two under par in the largest field since before Katrina. How they all arrived to that point on the fastest greens in the New Orleans area was a story in itself.

Fifteen year old Jacob Bergeron birdied four of his last six holes and came in at 68.

Scott Sterbcow two time runner-up fired the low round of the championship with a 66.

Chris Donaldson bogeys 18, his last hole in regulation play for a 72.

Buck Williams playing in his first Mackel birdies the last two holes for a 71.

The playoff started on hole 18. Donaldson’s second shot coming out of the right rough caught a limb and found the water hazard. Sterbcow missed the green left leaving a difficult up-and-down. Bergeronn hitting from the rough with his nine iron, caught a flyer leaving him 45 feet from the hole. Williams, the only player to hit the fairway, had his five iron second shot rolled through the green. Par was beginning to look like a good score.

Donaldson settled for bogey after his long putt for par was unsuccessful. Sterbcow’s chip ran to about 10 feet from the hole. Williams’ chip coming uphill into the grain stayed on the fringe. Bergeron’s putt went eight feet past the hole.

Williams, next to putt after Donaldson, rolled it in from 25 feet. Sterbcow and Bergeron both burn the lip. The sudden death was won with a par by the 32-year old Williams, who played college golf at Wake Forest with PGA Tour Professional Bill Haas.

This was a tough loss for Donaldson who was in final grouping last year only to close with an 80 and an opening round 70. His final round of 72 that included a whiff on the par-5 10th hole after second shot found the bushes behind the hole and a bogey on his last hole.

“It’s tough,” said Donaldson. “I’ve been playing tournament golf for years and this would have been a nice trophy to put on the mantle.”

Bergeron who is establishing himself as one of the top junior golfers in Louisiana won the junior division last year and is the reigning Tommy Moore Allstate Sugar Bowl Champion, a national junior championship also held at Lakewood.

“It was a great day, my 68 was with two bogies, but making birdies on four of last six holes. This was my best finish ever in competition,” said Bergeron.

When Sterbcow was asked if this was his second, second place finish, Sterbcow still in good spirits after the best round of the championship with 66, “No, this is my third.”

Williams, originally from Raleigh, N.C., said he doesn’t play golf as much as he’d like. He played professionally on the mini-tour circuit after graduating from Wake Forest but injuries helped him decide to leave the game. He regained his amateur status two years ago but said he’s only played in three tournaments in the last six years.

“(The Mackel) is the first tournament I’ve played in all year,” said Williams who has lived in New Orleans for the last three years. “I’ve been playing a little bit the last couple of weeks. We had a big Wake team reunion a couple of weeks ago. Played three days in a row, which was good. You really don’t have any (expectations) when you don’t play much.” The new Mackel champion could be the amateur to watch in Louisiana golf with this newfound success.
