The Brother Martin Athletics Department hosted their fall signing ceremony with faculty, friends, teammates, and families. Next year, Hayden Courregé ‘18 and Noah Velez ‘18 are stepping up their game as they move on to the next level in academics and athletics. Director of Athletics Mark Wisniewski ‘81 introduced the student-athletes before handing over the stage to Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, head cross country coach Drew Haro ‘03 and head lacrosse coach Greg Anderson.

Principal Gallagher noted that, “these young men are making a pathway for success. Hayden is one of the first Brother Martin students to receive a cross country and track and field collegiate scholarship in a very long time. Along with, Noah, who is the first Brother Martin student to ever receive a collegiate scholarship for our lacrosse club program.” Brother Martin is incredibly proud of these leaders and the accomplished young men they have become.

Coach Wisniewski concluded the ceremony with a few words about their various accomplishments at Brother Martin, both on the field and in the classroom. Then, the young men enjoyed some celebratory cake at a social that was held for all the families, friends, and coaches in the Benson Mall.

About the Signees:
Hayden Courregé, Brother Martin class of 2018, has received an athletic scholarship to compete in cross country and track and field for Louisiana State University. This offer comes as no surprise. Ever since Hayden was a freshman, he has shown the potential to compete at the collegiate level. During his cross country career, Hayden won the 2016 9-5A District Championship and never finished outside of the top 5 at the 5A State Championship culminating in a runner-up finish this year, and he led his team to 2nd, 5th, 4th, and 3rd place finishes in that time span. He held the cross country school record for 3-miles as a junior with a time of 15:05. On the track, Hayden has amassed impressive times while consistently being a top 5 runner across the state in multiple distance events. Hayden has run 4:24 for 1600m, 9:43 for 3200m, and 2:00 for 800m. In addition to these individual accolades, Hayden anchored the 4x800m relay team to a runner-up finish and school record of 8:18 at the Indoor State Championships in 2017. Hayden’s successes have set the bar extremely high for anyone who follows in his footsteps in the years to come. In addition to cross country and track, Hayden is a member of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and National Honor Society, along with the Student Recruiting Team.

Noah Velez ’18 has committed to and accepted a scholarship to play Division 2 lacrosse at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. Noah is the first lacrosse player from Brother Martin to be recruited and earn a scholarship to play Division 2 or higher. He led the Crusaders last year in scoring and set a school record of 6 goals in one game earning him First Team All-District honors and All State honorable mention honors. In addition to lacrosse, Noah is also a student ambassador, student recruiter and an extraordinary minister of holy communion.

The mission of Brother Martin High School is to form young people through a holistic education that fosters academic excellence in a caring, disciplined community which integrates Catholic tradition and the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to meet the needs of a changing world.
