Brother Martin continues run toward state wrestling title with win at LA Classic

It will be hard to prevent Brother Martin from winning a seventh state title in eight years in Division I next month at Bossier City.

Only Holy Cross, who interrupted Brother Martin’s run of state championships with a state title in 2017, would seem to have a shot at preventing what seems inevitable to many.

The Crusaders continued their dominance Saturday, capturing the Louisiana Classic in Baton Rouge by a solid margin of 37 points over second place Holy Cross. Jesuit was third, edging out St. Paul’s, who finished fourth. Teurlings Catholic was fifth among 52 schools competing, constituting close to 70 percent of the schools that will participate in the LHSAA state championships Feb. 8-9 in Bossier City.

Brother Martin won the title despite having only one individual champion in Mason Massicot (160). The Crusader won by placing 12 of its 14 wrestlers in the top six in their respective weight classes. Finishing second for Brother Martin were Daniel Croy (132), Alex Duncan (138), Seth Alfonso (152) and Michael Clapp (182).

Holy Cross had three winners, including Evan Frost (106), Jacob Frost (113) and Caden Mumme (182).

Defending state champion Perry Ganci of Jesuit was a winner in the heavyweight division (285).
