Brian Glover new Grace King football coach

A program desperately in need of stability has once again changed head coaches.

Grace King has hired Brian Glover as its new head football coach.

Glover takes over for Chadwick Lewis, who served just one year on the job. Lewis had taken over in 2019 for Bryant Holmes, who spent two years as the program’s head coach.

Winning has been hard to come by at Grace King where the Fighting Irish posted identical 1-9 records in 2018 and in 2019.

Since 2004, Grace King has a combined record of 30-120, including four winless seasons.

Glover becomes the ninth head coach in 17 years at Grace King, following a list that includes Malter Scobel, Byron Nihart, Stephen Ruckman, Alan Boyd, Bob Hitchins, Stuart Bott, Larry Lala, Bryant Holmes and Lewis.

Glover attended Pointe Coupee Central High School and Prairie View A&M.

Glover served as the head coach at Thrive Academy in Baton Rouge in 2019 in the school’s inaugural varsity season, going 0-9 after starting the program as a junior varsity program in 2018. Glover resigned following the 2019 season.

Previously, Glover coached at Pointe Coupee Central and served as offensive coordinator at Patterson.

“When I left Thrive Academy, honestly, my plan was to take a year off from coaching,” Glover said. “Then, after relaxing for a year, I was going to see what was out there. I ended up at Grace King as a PE teacher. I didn’t know who the coach was. When I saw Chadwick was the head coach, I knew him and had a relationship with him at Port Allen. I was going to help him.”

The plan changed quickly.

“About two weeks ago, he ended up resigning to go back to Port Allen,” Glover said. “I was named Interim coach and when they did the interviews, I decided to put my hat into it. I had gotten ingratiated with the program, the school, the staff and kids. I saw some things I the program that were positive. I know they have had a tough history. I saw an administration that was hungry for success. They want someone to be there for a long time to get the program turned around with stability, not to be used as a stepping stone.

Despite the lack of tradition, Glover is enthused and optimistic that he can eventually succeed with the Fighting Irish.

“At the point I am at in my career, I wanted to give it a shot,” Glover said. “Coach Lewis did some good things. It had started to turn in the right direction. I felt it was a good time to get in there and try to expand on the things he had put in place. It is not as bad of a job as it looks from the outside. There have been too many coaching changes here. We need to stabilize that.”
