HAMMOND, La. – Ty Brewer scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Pape Diop scored a career-high 25 to lead the Southeastern Louisiana men’s basketball team past SUNO, 79-74, Friday night at the University Center.

Brewer, a sophomore, finished the game 11-for-22 from the field while recording his fourth double-double of the season. The Meridian, Mississippi native leads the teams in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.7 rpg).

Diop, a Sengal native, scored a career-high as well scoring 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting. The junior also added four rebounds and two steals.

“We made it a point of interest to feed those two tonight,” said SLU men’s head basketball coach David Kiefer. “We felt like we had some advantages down low tonight and Ty and Pape did a terrific job of winning their battles all night long.”

SLU (3-6) finished the game 30-for-61 (49.2 percent). The Lions improved at the free throw line tonight as well as they entered the game shooting 59 percent as a team. Southeastern shot 17-for-21 (81 percent) from the line Friday.

The Knights (2-7) were led by Isiah Lewis with 25 points and shot 10-for-12 from the field. SUNO’s Shadon Green added 11 points to pace the Knights.

The Lions opened the game in familiar fashion as they stormed out to a 14-2 lead. The Knights, however, battled back rallying to take a 32-31 lead with 3:55 left in the first half. The game seesawed back and forth for the remainder of the half as SLU led 42-41 at halftime.

SUNO regained a 50-48 with 16:51 remaining before the Lions went on a 9-0 run to take the 57-48 lead. The Knight refused to go away cutting the SLU lead to one, 67-66, with 4:22 left. Southeastern scored eight straight points to take a 75-66 lead with under a minute to go and would hold on for the win.

“It’s hard to win a college basketball game,” said Kiefer. “I say that to our guys every day. It doesn’t matter who we play. They (SUNO) game in here with a chip on their shoulders and they battled us hard all night. We still made some silly mistakes tonight which prevented us from blowing the doors off early but I’m proud of our guys for grinding. But now we have to get ready for Lamar.”

The Lions will have 12 days off before returning to action Wednesday, Dec. 18 as they open Southland Conference play at Lamar at 7 p.m.
