Boys Prep Playoff Soccer Report for Fri., Feb. 8

Any thoughts of an upset in a match between district rivals were eroded slowly but surely Thursday night at Hunter Stadium.

Top-seeded St. Paul’s dominated play en route to a 4-0 victory over 16th-seeded Mandeville in a LHSAA Division I boys soccer regional round matchup in Covington. The matchup aired live on Crescent City Sports.

For St. Paul’s, the quest to regain the state title continues after clearing the first hurdle. Jut over two years ago, Mandeville stunned the Wolves in a district contest on the same pitch, 1-0, to end a three-year unbeaten run for St. Paul’s against in-state competition. However, this match resembled the Wolves’ 4-1 win over the Skippers just 16 days ago.

Senior midfielder Connor Walmsley shined in the Wolves’ playoff debut with three goals including the first two of the match from the penalty spot.

St. Paul’s (22-1-4), winners of four of the last five D1 titles under head coach Sean Moser, led just 1-0 at the half and missed several good chances before the floodgates opened. A foul in the area on a tackle by defender Brendan Williams on junior Michael Dufour set up St. Paul’s with another penalty kick. Williams then collected his second yellow before the ensuing kick of dissent, leaving the Skippers down to 10 players after Walmsley made it 2-0.

The Wolves then stuck quickly to expand the lead, scoring their third goal on a 20-yard strike by junior Jimmy Till just under the crossbar less than 90 seconds later.

James Bradford, who was creating issues for the Wolves in wide areas throughout the match, centered a ball from the right wing to Walmsley completed his hat trick with a strike from just outside the area just two minutes later.

Although forced to defend without the ball for most of the night, Mandeville (16-8-2) dodged several bullets early before Walmsley’s first penalty kick in the 23rd minute. The scoring chance was set up by a handball in the area whistled against Ryan Lombas.

Mandeville had a chance to avoid the shutout on the final attack of the match in extra time when Lombas headed a point-blank chance on the back post just over the crossbar set up by a long throw-in by Caden Costa.

St. Paul’s, who will host eighth-seeded Catholic-Baton Rouge in the quarterfinals next week, dominated possession and other key statistical categories including an 18-3 advantage in shots and 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
