Boys Prep Basketball Report: Rainey Jr., Johnson reach milestones
On Thursday night, it was St. Paul’s senior Parker Edwards reaching the magical 2,000 point milestone for the Wolves in his illustrious career.
On Friday night, a pair of outstanding players in bayou country who deserve notice served notice reaching milestones.
Anthony Rainey Jr. reached the elite 2,000 point mark for his career as H.L. Bourgeois downed Hahnville 82-74 in a District 7-5A contest at Gray. Rainey, a senior, is now the all-time leader in school history with 2,002 points. Divine Martin added 22 points for the Braves (23-10, 8-4). The Tigers fell to 22-9, 7-5 in district play.
The HLB win avenged a 72-70 loss at Hahnville on Jan. 23. H.L. Bourgeois was eighth in the most recent LHSAA Class 5A power rankings while Hahnville was 14th. The Tigers may still get a first-round home game in the playoffs.
SDakarai Johnson of Covenant Christian pumped in 50 points as the Lions downed Lutheran 85-60 in a non-district game in Metairie to improve to 19-9 overall.
In his third year playing varsity basketball, the senior Johnson went over 1,500 points with his smashing performance. The Gryphons fell to 6-16 with the defeat. Covenant Christian was eighth in the most recent LHSAA Division IV power rankings while Lutheran was 12th in the Division V power rankings.
