Two familiar foes met Friday in LHSAA Division II Boys Basketball quarterfinals when top seed University High hosted No. 8 De La Salle Cavaliers in Baton Rouge.

The teams met last year in the semifinal round with U-High winning 56-55. The teams also met in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with U-High winning twice and De La Salle taking a 81-69 in the 2017 state title game.

The host Cubs kept their overall postseason advantage in the series this time around with a hard-fought 47-45 victory over Cavaliers at the Pennington McKernan Gymnasium on the U-High/LSU campus.

Brock Brown scored in the final two seconds to life the Cubs to the semifinals.

De La Salle took the lead 37-36 on a 3-pointer by Ja’Kobe Walker early in the final quarter. The two teams then traded a couple of baskets down the stretch but the Cubs and Brown cashed in on their last chance.

With 1:15 to play, Eamon Kelly for the Cavaliers tied the game at 45 with a 3-pointer.

“We had a little trouble stopping De La Salle and we had less possessions but I told my team hold for the last shot,” U-High head coach Joe Spencer. “The Brown twins have done great for us this year. The Cavaliers are well coached and we’ve played each other so much it seems like a district game. They are much better than a 8 seed.”

Kelly his a pair of early threes but Collin Coates hit one at the end of the first quarter to cut De La Salles early lead to 11-9.

U-High ended the half on a 5-0 run with a Zaren James basket and another clutch triple from Coates with four seconds left to give the Cubs a 22-17 lead.

The 3rd quarter saw U-High build their lead to as many as six points at 28-22 but the Cavaliers battled back. With 3:30 to go in the quarter, Leonard Jackson scored to cap a 9-2 run and give De La Salle a 31-30 lead. Scoring once again at the end of a quarter, U-High held a 36-34 edge going to the fourth after Will McRae hit a three.

“I’m proud of my team. We are not an eight seed and this has been a frustrating year,” De La Salle Coach Paul Kelly said. “We prepared well in our playoff game preparations and we did not finish tonight as we would have wanted to.”

U-High was led by Collin Coates with 19 points, and Zaren James had 11.

De La Salle (12-9) was led by Eamon Kelly with 14 points.

U-High will face a crosstown foe, No. 5 St. Michael, on Wednesday night in Lafayette at the Cajundome. St. Michael defeated No. 4 E.D. White, 63-39, to advance.
