Boys Basketball Playoffs: Slidell, McMain, Country Day advance with wins Thursday

Boys Prep Basketball Playoff Report for Friday, Feb. 26

In Class 5A, No. 9 Slidell downed a District 6-5A rival – No. 24 seed Fontainebleau – in the opening round of the LHSAA state playoffs Thursday.

The two teams did not meet in the regular season with both games being canceled but the Tigers eliminated the Bulldogs, 77-67.

Senior Cooper Rachow led the Tigers with 23 points and eight rebounds while junior Micah Willis had 21 points, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range with 12 rebounds. Senior Lorenzo Caldwell had 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Slidell (20-8) advances to the regional round to face the winner of No. 8 Captain Shreve and No. 25 Sulphur. The Bulldogs end their season 16-9.

In 4A, No. 2 McMain easily handled No. 31 Rayne 75-52.

The Mustangs (19-5) advance to the regional round to meet the winner of No. 15 Booker T. Washington of Shreveport and No. 18 Beau Chene.

In Division III, No. 3 Notre Dame handled No. 14 Cristo Rey 66-33. The Pios (18-3) advance to meet the winner of No. 11 St. Charles Catholic and No. 6 Lafayette Christian in the quarterfinals.

In Division IV, always tough fifth seed Country Day looked good in a 66-44 victory over No. 12 Westminster Christian in Metairie Thursday evening in the regional round of the LHSAA state playoffs.

Country Day led 14-7 after one quarter and 30-18 at halftime. The Cajuns extended the lead to 50-31 going to the final quarter.

The Cajuns did it with balanced scoring as nine players scored.

Xane Hunter led the way with 13 points, Hartson Moss scored 11 points, Allen Nora had 10 points, Jordan Trahan contributed nine points and Connor Trahan finished with eight points.

Brennan Schwartz was a one-man gang for the Crusaders with 22 points while Cade Lyons finished with seven points.

Country Day (13-9) advances to face No. 13 St. Edmund in the quarterfinals. Westminster Christian ends its season at 15-11.
