Big second half powers Newman past St. Thomas Aquinas in Division III semifinals

LAFAYETTE – Isidore Newman came into the Division III semifinals on a mission. The goal was to get back to the state title game.

No. 4 seed St. Thomas Aquinas was on a mission as well, focused on pulling an upset over the top seeded Greenies.

After an evenly played first half, Newman caught fire to capture a 70-51 victory Thursday afternoon at the Cajundome.

Early in the third period, the Greenies started taking charge. Arch Manning and Todd Jones scored a pair of driving layups. Newman’s Canin Jefferson and Chris Lockett joined in with a pair of driving layups of their own during a 14-1 Newman run to take a 46-33 lead.

The Greenies later went another 14-1 run to put the game out of reach, extending to commanding 60-39 lead.

Newman had three players scoring in double figures. Montgomery led the Greenies with 16 points and six rebounds. Jefferson finished 14 points, eight assists and three rebounds. Jones had 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Lockett had nine points and five assists.

St. Thomas Aquinas jumped out to good start after the opening tip and led 10-4 inclhding Darrius Vaughn and Kendrell Perry’s driving layups. Newman countered when Austin Montgomery drilled a three-pointer and later Arch Manning scored a driving layup at the buzzer as the Greenies outscored the Falcons 13-4 to close out the quarter.

The Falcons started the second quarter with three-pointers by Jake Berner and Drew Milton. Jefferson converted a pair of driving layups tying the game 27-27 at the half.

St. Thomas Aquinas had two players scoring in double figures. Perry led the Falcons with 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Berner finished with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists. Milton scored nine points and 10 rebounds.

Newman will play Lafayette Christian in the Division III State Championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Cajundome.
