HAMMOND, La. – After surrendering a leadoff double in the ninth inning, Southeastern Louisiana reliever Jared Biddy struck out the side to close out a 4-3 nonconference win Wednesday over McNeese at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (25-20) has dominated the series under head coach Matt Riser, defeating the Cowboys (23-22) for the 16th time in 20 games and swept the two games this season.

The Lions looked as though they would run away with the game early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Cody Grosse led off the inning with a single through the left side. McNeese starting pitcher Zach Rider issued back-to-back-to-back one-out walks to Kyle Schimpf, Trey Harrington and Nathan Pilutti, forcing in Grosse with the first run.

After Schimpf was erased at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Rider hit back-to-back batters to force in the two more runs.

McNeese, which used seven pitchers in the game, started to scratch away at the Lions’ lead in the third. A leadoff single and a walk put a pair on with no outs. A fielder’s choice and a groundout plated the Cowboys’ first run.

A pair of two-out hits, including a double by McNeese’s Jacob Stracner, led to another run off Lion starting pitcher Trey Shaffer in the fourth.

While relievers Payton Robinson and Kade Granier did a superb job of working around runners in the fifth and sixth, the Cowboys eventually tied the game up in the eighth off Bryce Tassin. An infield single, McNeese’s fifth of the game, a stolen base set up a one-out RBI single by right fielder Julian Gonzales.

Southeastern answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Senior second baseman Brennan Breaud picked up the 200th hit of his Lion career, pulling a single through the right side to break up a string of 11 consecutive batters retired by McNeese pitching. Breaud, who now sits tied with Cody Gougler for fourth all-time in games played (221) as a Lion, advanced to second on a passed ball.

Nick Ray bounced a slow roller up the middle for a hit, but McNeese shortstop Reid Bourque kept the ball on the infield and caught Breaud rounding the bag at third. The ensuing rundown allowed Ray to move up to second base. Connor Manola grounded a ball to short that should have ended the inning, but Bourque booted it and Ray scored from second on the play.

Tassin (4-2) earned the win, allowing one run in one inning of work. Biddy picked up the save, his seventh of the season and 11th of his career. He now sits in sole possession of sixth place on Southeastern’s career saves list. Cowboy reliever Aiden Anderson (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run in one inning pitched.

Granier’s appearance was the 75th of his career, placing him sixth all-time in Lion history.

Southeastern returns to the road this weekend, traveling to Beaumont, Texas, for a three-game Southland Conference series at Lamar. Game times are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
