Basketball: West Jeff takes down depleted Rummel squad, 59-46

METAIRIE – Having faced tough competition, West Jefferson was more than prepared to handle a road trip Tuesday night to Archbishop Rummel.

After a slow start, the visiting Buccaneers took care of business, handling Rummel 59-46.

Playing without four starters who were said to be sick, the Raiders got off to a fast start, taking an 8-2 lead but the Buccaneers closed the first quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 15-8 lead.

Rummel responded with an 11-3 run to take a 19-18 lead and there were four lead changes in the second quarter but the Buccaneers closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 25-21 lead by halftime.

West Jeff broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Rummel 18-4 to take a commanding 43-25 lead going to the final quarter and substituted in the final frame.

Korey Newman scored 21 points ,including a trio of 3-pointers and he was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and did not play in the final quarter. Newman added four rebounds. London Sample finished with 12 points and three rebounds and Terrance Ross had eight points and three rebounds. DeQuan Royal added six points and eight rebounds.

The Buccaneers have already faced defending 4A state champion McMain, unbeaten Brother Martin, Jesuit, Landry and Donaldsonville, all excellent teams.

Denim Smith topped Rummel (2-1) with nine points and four rebounds, all in the fourth quarter while Ja’Mard Jones ended with eight points and six rebounds. Rummel was without five players, including starters Chase Marino, Cameron Reames, Bilal Kandil and Wayne St. John.

The Buccaneers (4-5) will next face De La Salle in the Chalmette Tournament Thursday while the Raiders (2-1) will host St. Thomas Aquinas Friday at 6 p.m.
