Basketball: West Jeff and Newman boys, Dominican and St. Martin’s girls with Monday wins
Area Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Jan. 11
West Jefferson continues to play well.
The Buccaneers went to McDonogh 35 and handled the Roneagles by a 65-50 margin Monday night for their third straight win.
Zee Augustine and Daquan Royal led West Jeff with 14 points each while Korey Newman scored 13 points.
West Jefferson (12-9) travels to play at Landry tonight at 7 p.m. while McDonogh 35 (3-10) will host Karr Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Newman, which had its big game with Sierra Canyon canceled last Friday, returned to action with a 76-63 victory at Salmen.
Austin Montgomery led the Greenies (13-4) with 26 points, Canin Jefferson scored 20 and Chris Lockett finished with 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Salmen (13-9) saw its six-game win streak come to an end.
In girls action, Dominican downed John Curtis Christian 46-41 in a 9-5A showdown in New Orleans.
It was the first win for Dominican over Curtis since the Lady Patriots, who have won five straight Division I state titles, joined the district.
Senior Sydney Sherman led Dominican (18-3, 2-0) with 20 points while Sophia Martin finished with nine points. Terren Coffil finished with 18 points for the Lady Patriots (12-5, 1-1).
The two teams will square off again Jan. 27 in River Ridge.
St. Martin’s Episcopal went to Country Day and dominated its rival 49-15 in the District 9-1A opener for both teams.
Kylar Coleman led the Saints with 16 points while Jayden Coleman had 15 points for St. Martin’s.
The Saints (7-4) will host East Jefferson Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. while the Cajuns (1-3) will host Newman Thursday at 5 p.m.
