Basketball: Thomas Jefferson, Shaw, St. Paul’s with wins Thursday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Friday, Dec. 13

It is not how you start, it is how you finish.

Thomas Jefferson rebounded from a slow start to rally past host Vandebilt Catholic in the Vandebilt Catholic Terrier Holiday Classic in Houma Thursday.

The Terriers jumped all over the Jaguars out of the gate, taking a commanding 14-0 lead but Thomas Jefferson would fight back.

Vandebilt Catholic maintained its lead at 19-5 at the end of one quarter before Thomas Jefferson began its comeback, outscoring the Terriers 17-6 in the second quarter to trail 25-22 by halftime.

The Jaguars took the lead early in the third quarter and led 40-34 going to the final period. The Terriers opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the game 42-42 but Thomas Jefferson recaptured the lead and never relinquished it.

Lionel Spears finished with 11 points while Devin Johnson had 10 for Thomas Jefferson (5-2). Jackson Hawthorne and Isaiah Parfait each scored 10 points for Vandebilt Catholic (2-6).

Thomas Jefferson will next face Lutcher tonight at 7:30 in the tournament.

Another West Bank team scored a big win at the Chalmette Tournament as Archbishop Shaw beat traditional power Riverside Academy 55-46.

Cam Johnson led the Eagles with 16 points while Isaiah Crawford scored 15. Isaiah Barnes added 11 for Shaw (7-2). The Rebels fell to 2-2 with the defeat.

At St. Paul’s, the Wolves fought off Archbishop Rummel 59-55.

The Wolves took a 17-13 lead after one quarter and led 33-27 by halftime. St. Paul’s expanded the lead to 50-40 going to the final quarter. Rummel rallied in the final stanza but could not overcome the Wolves.

Zach Fenn led a balanced attack for St. Paul’s with 10 points, Dylan Dimitrios and Matthew Mahoney each had nine points and Isiah Phillips and Ben Broussard finished with eight points each. St. Paul’s was 13-of-16 from the free throw line. The Wolves (6-3) outrebounded the Raiders 38-32.

Rohan Johnson led the Raiders (6-2) with 15 points, Bradley Schmitt had 13 and Kade Rivera finished with 12 points. Garrett Schmitt added seven points. Rummel was 14-of-18 from the free through line.
