Basketball: St. Paul’s starts fast, holds off Rummel
After falling in close fashion to Brother Martin in the state quarterfinals a year ago, St. Paul’s returned this season to finish what it started. The Wolves are off to a good start with the way they are playing.
Senior Devonte Allen pumped in 22 points and senior Chandler Owenby scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as St. Paul’s used its superior size to down Archbishop Rummel 62-54 at the Raider Gym Friday night.
The Raiders never quite recovered from a slow start as the Wolves (9-1) outscored Rummel 9-0 in the opening quarter and held the Raiders scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the contest before Rummel got going. It was 27-17 at halftime and 38-27 after three quarters.
Senior Parker Edwards added 10 points and five assists for St. Paul’s. Junior Donte Mitchell led the Raiders (8-2) with 19 points, sophomore Corey Smooth had 16 and senior Iman Fazande finished with nine points.
St. Paul’s is ranked No. 1 in the most recent Division I power rankings. The only loss for the Wolves came out of state.
Both teams open play in the annual Country Day Tournament in Metairie next Wednesday with St. Paul’s taking on John Curtis Christian and Rummel facing Catholic of Baton Rouge.
