Basketball: South Plaquemines scores district win over St. Katharine Drexel; Country Day beats Karr

Area Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Jan. 23

In girls action, South Plaquemines downed St. Katharine Drexel 49-39 at home in a District 11-2A contest Wednesday evening.

The Hurricanes led 7-6 after one quarter and it was 17-15 at halftime. South Plaquemines increased the lead to 36-27 after three quarters.

Talented freshman Kameryn Williams led the way with 17 points and two assists, junior Davion Phillips had 12 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists and sophomore Ty’vion Riley finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks and two assists.

South Plaquemines (7-7, 2-0) returns to district play at Cohen this evening at 5:30 p.m. while St. Katharine Drexel (0-4, 0-1) also plays at home in district play today at 5 p.m. against Einstein Charter.

In boys action, Country Day traveled to the West Bank and edged Karr 49-45 for its third straight win.

The Cajuns led 11-8 after one quarter and expanded its edge to 27-15 by halftime. The Cougars had a big third quarter, outscoring Country Day 19-7 to tie the game 34-34 going to the final quarter when the Cajuns won that period 15-11 to post the victory.

Xane Hunter led Country Day with 19 points while Justin Ibieta finished with 18 points. The Cajuns sank 21-of-25 free throws, a key factor in the victory. Alfred Anderson led Karr with 19 points.

Country Day (7-11) travels to Baton Rouge to take on Division I power Catholic Friday night at 7:15 while Karr (9-11) will travel to M.L. King Charter Friday at 5:30 p.m.
