Basketball: Sophie B. Wright wins Purple Knight Classic

With size, experience and talent, Sophie B. Wright is serving notice to all Class 3A teams in Louisiana that is a team to contend with for state honors.

The Warriors continue to prove this Friday night, whipping host St. Augustine 58-44 to win the Purple Knight Classic at Watson Jones Gymnasium.

The Warriors jumped out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter and led 31-26 at the half. The big quarter was the third quarter as the Warriors outscored the Purple Knights 15-3 to take a commanding 46-29 lead going to the fourth quarter and were never threatened.

D.J. Burns led Sophie B. Wright with 18 points while Greg Hammond added 15 points. Devon Jefferson topped the Purple Knights (10-7) with eight points while Jalvin Mitchell added seven points.

The win was the seventh straight for the Warriors (16-3).

Both teams return to action Tuesday. Sophie B. Wright will open District 9-3A action at 5:30 p.m. at home against Sci Academy. St. Augustine opens District 9-5A play at John Curtis Christian at 7 p.m.
