Basketball: Scotlandville handles Newman, Rummel downs Tara

Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 29

Scotlandville has been the dominant program in Division I for many years now.

Based on current affairs, it does not look like that will change in 2023.

In a showdown of top programs in their respective classes, the Hornets handled Newman 71-48 in the Madison Prep Tournament.

Scotlandville controlled play from the start and was never threatened.

Dorian Booker led the Hornets with 26 points, Chase Sample had 20 points and Jamal Drewery finished with 14 points.

Canin Jefferson led the Greenies with 23 points while Chris Leman scored 15 points.

Scotlandville (23-2) is No. 1 in the Select Division I power rankings while Newman is No. 1 in the Select Division Division III power rankings. The Hornets have won 16 consecutive games.

Archbishop Rummel ventured out of district and easily defeated Tara 63-27 at home Saturday.

The Raiders controlled play from the start, taking a 15-4 lead after one quarter and a 29-11 halftime lead. It was 47-19 going to the fourth quarter.

Junior Evan Giarratano led Rummel with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals while junior Chance Joseph had nine points. Giarratano was 10 of 12 from the free throw line.

Rummel (17-8) returns to District 9-5A play Tuesday night at Jesuit.
