Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Dec. 1

After a very difficult season with two victories (one officially), Archbishop Rummel is an improved team and ready to make progress this season.

The Raiders are off to a good start at 2-0 after a 61-48 victory at Lusher Charter Tuesday night.

Rummel led 13-9 after one quarter and 34-21 at halftime. The Lions cut the deficit 45-38 after three quarters but the Raiders slowly pulled away for the solid road win.

Chase Marino led the Raiders with 15 points while Ja’Mard Jones finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Darrius Davis finished with nine points.

“It was a very good defensive effort,” Rummel coach Scott Thompson said. “We are playing 11-12 guys, rotating a host of players. We are a very young team but hungry and have shown tremendous growth. The effort is clearly there.”

Rummel returns to action next Tuesday at home against West Jefferson while Lusher (4-2) will play Albany Friday at 5 p.m. in the Northlake Christian Tournament.

Bonnabel has won four straight after a solid 75-72 win over St. Amant in Kenner, handing the Gators their first loss of the season.

In a game of spurts, the Bruins trailed 21-9 midway through the second quarter but turned it on from there to lead by one at halftime. The Gators sprinted out to an 11-point lead in the third quarter but Bonnabel came back, once again, finally taking the lead with 1:45 to play in the game on back-to-back 3-pointers ty Dai’sean McGee and Shawn Knight.

Vandell Smith, the only returning starter for the Bruins from a year ago, led the way with 23 points and eight assists while Knight was the leading scorer with 25 points, including knocking down an amazing eight 3-pointers on 8-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman Jeremiah Lucas had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Carlos Blue added 11 points.

The Bruins (7-2) play at unbeaten Brother Martin Friday night while the Gators (4-1) will host Broadmoor next Tuesday.

In The Battle of Algiers, Landry handled rival Karr 73-56 at home.

The Chargin’ Bucs led 22-19 after one quarter and 37-31 at halftime. Landry pulled out to a 56-39 lead after three quarters.

Anthony Johnson led Landry with 19 points while Vo Nicholas and Franswar Neal each scored 15 points for the Bucs. Larry Howard added 10 points. Leland Smith was a virtual one-man show for the Cougars, pumping in 28 points.

Landry (4-2) will next face West Jefferson this evening in the Sophie B. Wright Tournament while Karr (2-1) will next face West Jefferson on Dec. 14.
