Basketball Report: Sophie B. Wright wins while Landry-Walker and Karr fall at MLK Showcase

Area Boys Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Jan. 22

The annual Martin Luther King Showcase at Xavier University was outstanding as always, featuring outstanding teams.

In the end, one New Orleans power emerged victorious while two Baton Rouge area teams gained the edge over New Orleans area squads.

Sophie B. Wright downed defending Class 5A state champion Walker 79-65.

Sophie B. Wright led 20-12 after one quarter before expanding the lead to 36-25 by halftime. The Warriors put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 28-14 to take a commanding 64-39 lead going to the final frame.

Damiree Burns and Gregory Hammond each scored 21 points to lead the Warriors (24-3) while Rashaun Vance had 14 points and Charlie Russell added 12 points. Jalen Cook led the Wildcats (19-8) with 29 points.

Defending Class 3A state champion Madison Prep held off Landry-Walker 51-47.

It was close throughout.

The Chargin’ Bucs led 13-10 after one quarter and led 22-21 at halftime. The Chargers led 36-34 going to the final period.

Jaheim Spencer led Madison Prep (18-7) with 24 points while Elijah Tate added 16 points. Dawashn Griffin led Landry-Walker (13-7) with 22 points.

The third game was no contest as defending Division I state champion Scotlandville routed Karr 93-48 behind 29 points from Taireon Joseph and 21 points from Reece Beekman. Carvelle Teasett had 17 points and Jonathan Horton added 12 for the Hornets (25-1). Junior Reynaud Shields led the Cougars (8-16) with eight points.
