Basketball Report: Rummel takes down Holy Cross, 56-48
In need of a victory after two consecutive district losses, Archbishop Rummel found its way back to the win column with a solid performance Friday night in Metairie.
In the midst of trying to make a decision on where he will play college football, senior forward Aaron Brule pumped in 17 points while junior guard Donte Mitchell scored 16 points, including 12 in the third quarter, as the Raiders downed visiting Holy Cross 56-48 at the Raider Gym.
The Tigers took a 12-8 lead after one quarter but Rummel rallied to grab a 24-20 lead by halftime. Behind Mitchell, Rummel posted a decisive 16-8 third quarter to take a 40-28 lead to the final period and Holy Cross was never able to recover, never cutting the deficit to more than eight points the rest of the way. Sophomore Corey Smooth added eight points for the Raiders (15-8, 3-2).
Jason Chan topped the Tigers (12-8, 2-3) with nine points while Myles Sanders and Kalil Thomas each had eight points.
“We know they like to play fast so we opted to control the tempo early,” said Rummel head coach Troy Holley. “We had to rebound well and we did a solid job. We were determined to play better after playing poorly in our last two games.”
Both teams return to action next Tuesday. The Raiders travel to district leader Brother Martin for a non-district contest while Holy Cross hosts Ben Franklin in a non-district contest.
