Basketball Report: Brother Martin-Chalmette to meet in tourney final
Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Nov. 25
It will be host Brother Martin against Chalmette for the championship of the Brother Martin Crusader Invitational this evening at 6:15 p.m. at Bob Conlin Gymnasium.
The host Crusaders easily dismissed Warren Easton 74-39 while the Owls edged De La Salle, 51-48.
Brother Martin (4-0) broke its game open early, jumping out to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and expanded the edge to 35-15 by halftime. It was 60-21 after three quarters.
Brock Ranlett led the Crusaders with 20 points, Corey Skillman had 16, Grant Delord contributed 12 points and Rex Hernandez scored 10 in a balanced effort.
The rest of the schedule for the tournament Wednesday has Vandebilt Catholic meeting Abramson Sci Academy at 1 p.m., Sarah Reed facing Parkview Baptist at 2:45 p.m. and Warren Easton (1-3) meeting De La Salle in the consolation contest at 4:30 p.m.
As for games Tuesday, Sarah Reed defeated Vandebilt Catholic, 51-39.
In a tight game throughout, Chalmette led 19-17 after one quarter and 26-23 at halftime. The Owls (2-2) built the lead to 39-33 going to the final quarter and held off the Cavaliers.
Frank Ceaser led Chalmette with 20 points, Victor Sims had 12 points, Jahlil Humble scored eight points and Darrius Sanchez added seven points for the Owls. Leonard Jackson scored 18 points while Jacobi Walker added 13 for the Cavaliers (1-2).
In girls action, it was a battle of traditional powers and it went down to the wire as Ursuline Academy edged defending Class 2A state champion Doyle, 61-60, at the Doyle Tournament.
Senior guard Tyrielle Williams was brilliant for the Lions, pumping in 28 points, junior forward Nicole Young had 11 and junior guard Catherine Legendre finished with 10 points.
Ursuline (3-0), which won Division II state titles in 2016 and 2018, returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mount Carmel Academy while Doyle (1-2) travels to Episcopal on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.
Mandeville dominated from start to finish in a 65-22 victory over Archbishop Chapelle at the Fontainebleau Tournament.
The Skippers led 16-1 after one quarter and 38-9 by halftime. It was 58-20 going to the final quarter.
Senior Jaylyn James was again dominant with 32 points, going 13-of-22 from the field, including a 3-pointer and converting 5-of-6 free throw attempts. A UL (Lafayette) commit, James had a double-double with 10 rebounds and added two assists, two rebounds and a block. Senior Carley Crain added nine points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Mandeville (4-1) will play at Albany next Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the Chipmunks (1-3) will host John Ehret at 11 a.m. Saturday.
