Basketball: Ponchatoula shocks Madison Prep; Landry, Douglass, McMain, MLK win in BTW Classic

The Ponchatoula boys opened the season 0-3, losing three games by a total of 15 points.

The Green Wave have rolled since, clearly establishing themselves as prime contender in the state in Class 5A.

That was on full display Saturday evening as Ponchatoula shocked two-time defending Class 3A state champion Madison Prep 54-48 in the Charger Classic at Scotlandville.

Jeremiah Lewis led Ponchatoula with 26 points.

Jayce Depron scored 14 points for the Chargers (23-2).

The Green Wave now have impressive wins over Scotlandville, Country Day, Richwood, Walker (split two games), Northshore and now Madison Prep.

Currently fourth in the Non-Select Division I power rankings, Ponchatoula (23-6) won its seventh straight game and the Green Wave face a key District 6-5A game at St. Paul’s Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

In the Booker T. Washington Classic, Landry downed defending Division III state champion Archbishop Hannan 53-48.

The Hawks led 18-14 after one quarter and 26-20 at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Buccaneers. Landry tied it 30-30 after three quarters before taking over in the final frame.

Vo Nicholas led the way with 17 points and five rebounds while Daryl Adams III had 15 points and seven assists. Franswar Neal did all of his damage from long distance, sinking five 3-pointers for 15 points.

Drew Timme topped the Hawks with 22 points while Zach Lauro had 10 points.

The Buccaneers (18-9) will host Archbishop Shaw Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a District 10-4A showdown.

Hannan (17-6) will host McDonogh 35 Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Douglass rallied past host Booker T. Washington 45-38.

The Lions controlled play in the first half and held a 19-9 halftime lead before the Bobcats exploded in the second half.

Tommy Hilliard led Douglass (13-14) with 18 points.

McMain held off St. Augustine 53-49.

In a close game throughout, St. Augustine led 29-28 at halftime.

Lionel Larvadain led a balanced Mustangs attack with 13 points while Oren Bowens scored 10 points.

Cy Merrett topped the Purple Knights with 16 points while Turner Duncan finished with 12 points.

McMain (10-5) won its third straight game and the Mustangs play at The Willow School Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in District 9-4A play.

St. Augustine (16-13) returns to District 9-5A play Tuesday night at Karr at 7 p.m.

M.L. King Charter posted an impressive 59-53 win over St. Paul’s.

The Jaguars held a slim lead throughout the first half and carried a 30-25 lead into halftime. M.L. King extended the lead to 52-40 after three quarters and held off the Wolves in the final quarter for the win.

Darunce Allen, who went over 1,200 points for his career Friday night, led the Jaguars with 25 points while Chris Doyle added 15 points. David Webb had 14 points and Darrell Franklin finished with 10 points.

Reece Seicshnaydre topped St. Paul’s with 20 points, Max Derbes scored 12 points and Ben Owenby finished with 10 points.

The Jaguars (18-10) return to action at Sophie B. Wright Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Wolves (19-8) will host Ponchatoula Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a key District 6-5A contest.
