Basketball: Newman wins own tourney with convincing win over St Aug
Talk about being rude hosts!
Newman dominated from start to finish in a convincing 50-26 victory over St. Augustine to win the annual Newman Invitational Saturday evening. The win marked the first time since 1976 that Newman won its own tournament. The victory was the eighth straight for Newman.
It was a slow start for both teams as Newman led 7-4 after one quarter. The Greenies broke it open in the second quarter, outscoring St. Augustine 13-2 to take a 20-6 halftime lead. Newman expanded the lead to 33-12 after three quarters and it was easy going the rest of the way.
James Amoss, named Most Outstanding Player, led the Greenies (11-2) with 23 points while Riley Demps had 14. Bryson Celestine led the Purple Knights (7-5) with 12 points.
St. Augustine returns to action Monday at Ellender at 7 p.m. while Newman returns to action at Riverdale Friday at 6 p.m.
