Basketball: Newman boys open season with win at Mandeville

Area Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Nov. 16

It was a very good season for Newman in 2020-21.

The Greenies reached the Division III state championship game, falling 52-48 to Dunham.

The promise of an even better season in 2021-22 is real.

That promise began Monday as Newman went to Mandeville and prevailed 61-45 over the Skippers in the season opener for both teams.

Newman took a solid 17-7 lead after one quarter and held a 28-21 lead by halftime. The Greenies broke it open in the third quarter, outscoring the Skippers 19-10 to take a 47-31 lead going to the final quarter.

Canin Jefferson led the way for Newman with 18 points, Chris Lockett scored 17 points and Todd Jones added 12 points and blocked seven shots.

Newman returns to action hosting Bogalusa Friday at 6 p.m. while Mandeville will host Scotlandville Thursday at 7 p.m.
