Basketball: McMain, St. Paul’s highlight Festgiving Classic with thrilling wins

McMain is the defending Class 4A state champion.

The Mustangs are ready to defend that title and make a run at another title.

In a showdown of top teams in the state, McMain edged Class 3A power Bossier 64-63 in the nightcap of the Festgiving Classic at McDonogh 35 Saturday.

The Mustangs led 15-12 after one quarter and extended the lead to 32-26 by halftime. It was 51-44 going to the final quarter before the Bearkats rallied to make it close but could not get over the top. Bossier hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final margin of victory one point for McMain.

Nicholas Kaigler led McMain with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Corey Chest had 17 points, 11 rebounds and two steals and Christian Pichon finished with 11 points and three steals. Joseph Manning was a star for Bossier with 24 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two assists, Javon Johnson had 17 points and four rebounds and Marquis Harris finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

McMain (3-0) returns to action on Monday, Dec. 6 against West Jefferson while Bossier (3-2) will host Ouachita Parish on Dec. 7.

In another thriller, St. Paul’s came from behind to outlast Newman 85-81 in an overtime thriller.

St. Paul’s beat the Greenies from long distance, accounting for 42 points from 3-point range on 14 made attempts.

Newman took a 20-14 lead after one quarter and the Greenies led 42-31 at halftime and looked to be in control

St. Paul’s was a different team in the second half.

The Wolves outscored Newman 20-12 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 54-51 going to the final quarter when St. Paul’s won that quarter 23-20 to force overtime. Zach Fenn scored six points in the overtime period to lead the Wolves to the big win.

Andrew Zibilich pumped in 29 points, including six 3-pointers and scored four points in overtime for the Wolves. Jeremy Autin finished with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Zach Fenn scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer. Bryan Alexander added with points.

Canin Jefferson led Newman with 27 points while Chris Leman had 19 points. Chris Lockett scored 13 points and Austin Montgomery finished with 12 points for the Greenies.

St. Paul’s (4-1) has won four straight games since opening the season with a loss at Karr. The Wolves will next face St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday while Newman (4-2) will face Terrebonne Thursday at 6 p.m.
