Basketball: McDonogh 35 surprises St. Thomas More in Country Day Classic opening day action
On the opening day of the annual Country Day Tournament, there was one result that may be considered a surprise as McDonogh 35 whipped traditional power St. Thomas More 55-41.
It was the third straight win for the Roneagles (8-5). The Cougars fell to 6-5.
The Roneagles will play defending Division V state champion Crescent City Christian tonight at 8:30 p.m. The Pioneers edged Karr 52-51 in a thriller. Crescent City improved to 10-11 with the win while the Cougars fell to 5-5 with the loss.
St. Paul’s fought off a challenge from John Curtis Christian, winning 68-63. The Wolves (10-1) advance to take on host Country Day (7-3) tonight at 7 p.m. Curtis fell to 4-8 with its third straight loss. The Cajuns downed Northshore 50-38 for its fourth straight win.
Unbeaten Riverside drilled Hahnville 76-52. The Rebels (11-0) advance to take on Landry-Walker today at 5:30 p.m. The Chargin’ Bucs scored an impressive 61-47 victory over defending Division II state champion De La Salle, 61-47.
Breshaun Delpit had 14 points while Semaj Matthews finished with 13 points for Landry-Walker (9-3). The Cavaliers fell to 6-4 with the loss.
Catholic of Baton Rouge whipped Archbishop Rummel 69-56. Hunter Williams led the Bears with 19 points while Colin Holloway had 15 points. Catholic (9-2) advances to face powerful Scotlandville (9-2) today at 4 p.m.
