Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 25

Don’t look now but Scott Thompson is slowly improving his program in a rebuilding effort at Archbishop Rummel.

The Raiders played outstanding defense throughout in a 38-29 victory over Jesuit Friday night in Metairie.

In a game where points were at a premium, the Blue Jays and Raiders were tied 6-6 after one quarter before Rummel took a 15-10 lead by halftime. The Raiders maintained their 5-point edge, 27-22 by the end of the third quarter.

Sophomores Noah Davis and Rohan Johnson led Rummel with nine points each.

The Raiders (14-8, 2-3) have now won two straight district contests and Rummel will host Holy Cross Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays (10-10, 1-4) will host Catholic League leader St. Augustine Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

This week has been a wild, emotional ride of ups and downs for Mandeville in district play.

After a heartbreaking 65-60 overtime loss at home to St. Paul’s Tuesday night in District 6-5A action, the Skippers found themselves in overtime again in district play Friday night.

This time, Mandeville prevailed in a 68-67 thriller at Hammond.

Sophomore Bryce Weinmunson pumped in 24 points, junior Gavie Faure’ had 22 points and senior Will Sheppard finished with 10 points.

The Skippers (18-8, 4-2) return home to host Covington at 7 p.m. while the Tornadoes (7-18, 1-5) will travel to Ponchatoula at 7 p.m.
