Basketball: M.L. King Charter and West St. John girls stay hot with wins Wednesday

Area Girls Prep Basketball Report for Thursday, Feb. 7

Make it seven straight wins for M.L. King Charter.

The Lady Jaguars edged Livingston Collegiate 40-39 on the road Wednesday night to clinch the District 11-2A district championship.

Dalyn Belvin led the Lady Jags with 16 points, Simone Pierre had 15 and Jasmine Theodore added seven points. M.L. King Charter was tenth in the most recent LHSAA Class 2A power rankings.

M.L. King Charter (17-6, 4-0) closes out its regular season Friday at Cohen at 5 pm while the Wolves (11-5, 1-3) finishes its regular season Friday at Einstein Charter at 5:30 pm.

At Edgard, West St. John handled Grace King 49-34 in its regular season finale.

The Lady Rams took an 18-9 lead after one quarter and led 29-18 at the half. It was 36-24 going to the fourth quarter.

Senior Stevante Hamilton and senior Nazel Breaux each scored 12 points while junior Kylie Adams had 11 for West St. John (28-8). Sophomore Steffiona Washington had eight points for the Fighting Irish while junior Brittney Mendes and freshman Sanaa Holmes each had six points for Grace King (9-23).

The Lady Rams, eighth in the latest LHSAA Class 1A power rankings, are a hot team entering the playoffs, having won six straight games. The Fighting Irish will close out their regular season Thursday at Bonnabel at 5 pm.
