Basketball: John Ehret and MLK boys, Ponchatoula girls win Friday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Feb. 4

In boys competition, John Ehret is the team to beat in District 8-5A.

In a battle for first place, the Patriots remained unbeaten in league play with a tough 54-47 win at Chalmette Friday night.

John Ehret took a 17-10 lead after one quarter and led 25-19 at halftime. The Owls cut the deficit to 34-31 going to the fourth quarter.

John Kelly led Ehret with 26 points while Frank Moffett added 16 points. Bryant Major and Ezekiel Reese each scored 10 points for Chalmette.

Both teams resume district play next week.

The Patriots (17-6, 3-0) have won four straight and will host Grace King next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Owls (11-16, 2-1) will host East Jefferson next Wednesday.

It was a banner night at home for M.L. King Charter.

The Jaguars whipped Sarah T. Reed 87-46.

Senior Darunce Allen was the star, as usual, pumping in 25 points with eight steals.

In the process, Allen scored his 1,200th career point, another milestone in his outstanding career.

Darrell Franklin scored 15 points with six steals and five assists and Christian Doyle scored 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocks.

M.L. King Charter (17-10) returns to action today for a tough game at St. Paul’s at 2:30 p.m.

Sarah T. Reed (14-13) returns to District 9-3A play Tuesday at Morris Jeff Community at 6:30 p.m.

In girls action, Ponchatoula rolled over Fontainebleau 78-45 at home in a District 6-5A contest for its fifth straight win.

The Lady Wave jumped out to a 25-11 lead after one quarter and led 45-24 at halftime. It was 68-35 after three quarters.

Taylor Jackson led the Green Wave with 22 points, five rebounds and three steals while Alyssa Hillard scored 17 points and Libby Thompson added 15 points and seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Isabelle Chevalier led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Ponchatoula (20-9, 5-0) is well on its way to another district title while looking to improve its power ranking. Currently sixth in the Non-Select Division I rankings, the Green Wave play at River Oaks today at 12:30 p.m.

Fontainebleau (13-16, 1-4) lost its third straight game and will play at Doyle Monday at 6 p.m.
