Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 15

A pair of good Catholic League games Saturday evening left one team standing atop the league unbeaten in the early going.

John Curtis went to Gentilly rallied past Brother Martin, 57-50.

The visiting Patriots took a 15-14 lead after one quarter, ending the quarter on a 6-0 run after Brother Martin went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-9 lead.

The Crusaders controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Patriots 16-9 to take a 30-24 lead into the break.

The Patriots controlled play in the second half, outscoring Brother Martin 33-20.

Curtis took a 40-38 lead after three quarters but the game was close, not decided until the final minute.

Curtis did it with balanced scoring.

Michael Turner and Mark Johnson each scored 10 points, Autrail Manning scored nine points and Midnight Martin and Aaron Johnson each added eight points for the Patriots.

DJ Fowler topped Brother Martin (17-7. 2-2) with 13 points while Eli Pichon scored 11 and Troy Santa Marina had 11 points.

John Curtis Christian (15-3, 3-0) remained unbeaten and alone in first place in District 9-5A with the win.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday as the Patriots travel to Karr while the Crusaders host Jesuit.

A night after being whipped at Brother Martin, Archbishop Rummel was challenged to show toughness.

The Raiders hosted rival Jesuit, who had edged the Raiders by a point for the Gold Bracket championship of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic a week ago.

Once again, the two rivals would go down to the wire and then some.

Darrius Davis sank a pair of free throws with 33 seconds remaining in overtime and the Raiders held on for a 48-46 win over the Blue Jays in a District 9-5A thriller.

Jesuit led 42-39 with 2.6 seconds left when senior guard Chase Marino nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game and he was fouled. Marino was unable to hit the game-winning free throw, sending the game into overtime.

The game was close throughout.

Rummel led 6-5 after one quarter and 20-19 at halftime. The Raiders maintained a 30-27 lead after three quarters.

Davis led the Raiders (15-6, 2-1) with 14 points while Ja’Mard Jones had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Davis was just 4 of 12 from the free throw line but made the two that mattered most. Chance Joseph and Kendrick Joseph each scored nine points for Rummel.

Jesuit (15-6, 1-2) saw its four-game win streak end. Josh Washington led the Blue Jays with 14 points.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday as Rummel hosts St. Augustine while Jesuit plays at Brother Martin.
