Basketball: Hammond, Riverdale, West Jefferson with district wins Friday
Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 29
It was a busy Friday night on the hardwood in district play.
In District 6-5A action, Hammond snapped a four-game losing streak, winning at Fontainebleau 56-42.
The Bulldogs took the early lead at 16-15 after one quarter but the Tornadoes outscored Fontainebleau 17-5 to take a 32-21 halftime lead. The lead grew to 45-30 going to the final quarter.
Junior Jahiem Johnson led Hammond with 21 points, senior Devin Daniels had 15 points and five blocks and senior Devan Guillory finished with 11 points.
Both teams return to action Tuesday. Hammond (15-10, 3-5) will host district leader St. Paul’s at 7 p.m. while Fontainebleau (13-12, 1-6) travels to Covington at 7 p.m.
In the District 8-5A opener for both teams, Riverdale downed Chalmette 72-64 at home.
The Owls took a 19-15 lead after one quarter before Riverdale tied it at 30-30 by halftime. The Rebels grabbed a 49-45 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Roland Bullard led Riverdale with 22 points and seven rebounds, Earl Ulmer had 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals, Monroe Gardner had 14 points, seven rebounds and six steals and Ke’Vonte Hutchinson finished with seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Both teams return to district play Tuesday night. Riverdale (9-6) will host Grace King while Chalmette (8-15) will host West Jefferson.
Speaking of the Buccaneers, West Jefferson went to the Bear Trap and escaped with a 71-70 victory at Bonnabel.
Daquan Royal had 20 points, Korey Newman scored 15 points and Tarance Ross finished with 14 points.
Both teams will play non-district games Monday night. The Buccaneers (15-11) will host John F. Kennedy in a non-district game while the Bruins (13-10) will host Phoenix at 6 p.m.
