Basketball: Hammond handles Covington, East Jefferson drops Chalmette in OT

Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 16

In District 6-5A play Friday night, Hammond whipped Covington 77-60.

The Tornadoes took a 14-8 lead after one quarter and held a slim 28-26 lead at halftime.

Hammond led 51-45 going to the fourth and decisive quarter in which they outscored Covington 26-15 to pull away.

Senior Justice Kelly led Hammond with 21 points, senior Terrance Selders had 19, senior Jarvis Earlycutt had 15 points and junior Devin Daniels finished with 11 points.

Both teams return to 6-5A Hammond (6-5, 1-2) will host Northshore Tuesday at 7 p.m. while Covington (11-9) will host Slidell at 7 p.m.

East Jefferson downed Chalmette 60-55 in overtime.

The Warriors overcame a slow start as they were ice cold and trailed 11-2 after one quarter before cutting the deficit to 22-18 by halftime. It was 37-29 going to the final quarter when the Warriors rallied to tie it 50-50 going to overtime where East Jeff outscored Chalmette 10-5 for the win.

Chris Flippin led the Warriors with 18 points and six rebounds, Molik Reese had 17 points and seven rebounds and Arthur Oliver had 11 points and four assists.

Jahlil Humble topped East Jefferson with 17 points while Kemalice Anderson had 14 points.

East Jefferson (12-6) host Monday at 6:30 p.m. while Chalmette (9-0) will play at Grace King on Jan. 26.
