Area Prep Basketball Report for Sunday, Jan. 3

After starting the season in outstanding, fast fashion, COVID-19 slowed down a talented Hahnville squad.

A season after reaching the Final Four in Class 5A, Hahnville is primed to make another deep run in the Class 5A playoffs.

The Tigers built a solid lead on the road and then held off St. Augustine, 69-62, Saturday evening for its second straight win after being out of action for 20 days.

Senior Claudell Harris Jr., a Charleston Southern signee, led Hahnville with 22 points and 11 rebounds while senior Kaden Pierre had 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. Junior Tyren Lebeauf finished with 13 points and three assists for the Tigers.

Mike Coleman topped the Purple Knights with 15 points while Preston Bax had 14 and Aston Trufant finished with 11 points for St. Aug.

Hahnville’s only loss was to Madison Prep. The Tigers are second in the most recent 5A power rankings, behind only West Monroe.

Hahnville (11-1) opens District 7-5A play Tuesday night at home against Terrebonne while St. Augustine (7-4) will open District 9-5A play Tuesday night at Archbishop Shaw at 7:30 p.m.
