Area Prep Basketball Report for Tuesday, Dec. 3

Always known for its great success in football, winning six state titles, Hahnville is attempting to join the ranks of the elite in basketball, seeking a first state championship.

Last season, Hahnville served notice that it was becoming a force in Class 5A basketball.

The Tigers reached the Final Four in Lake Charles, falling to eventual state champion Alexandria in the semifinals.

With a host of key players back, Hahnville is ready to make another deep run, perhaps all the way to that elusive state crown.

The Tigers are off to a great start.

Hahnville remained unbeaten with a convincing 59-38 victory Wednesday evening at Edna Karr.

The Tigers led 15-12 after one quarter and opened up a 35-26 lead by halftime. Hahnville put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 19-5 to take a commanding 54-31 lead going to the final quarter.

Claudell Harris topped the Tigers with 15 points, including 11 in the first half. Tyren Lebeauf scored 11 and Kaden Pierre finished with 10 points and Koi Smith had eight points for the Tigers.

Tyren Richard and Leland Smith each scored eight points to top the Cougars.

Hahnville coach Yussef Jasmine was very happy with his team and likes what he has seen thus far this season.

“We defended well, rebounded well and did not turn the ball over,” Jasmine said. “We are playing well right now. We are showing great poise while developing the necessary chemistry that will be needed to endure the quest to March.”

If the Tigers continue playing the way they are, they will have a very good shot at playing in March.

Hahnville (6-0) will host traditional power Jehovah-Jireh (4-2) tonight at 7 p.m. The Warriors are the three-time defending Division V state champion.

“Playing a challenging schedule will prepare us well for a good district and for the state playoffs,” Jasmine said.
