With the split among select and non-select schools in girls basketball, Division I is a small gathering of big basketball powers with only nine schools in the classification.

This year is no exception.

While McKinley (22-3) is the top-ranked team in the most recent power rankings by virtue of a one-point win over defending state champion John Curtis Christian, the Patriots are a close second with Dominican third and Mount Carmel fourth. With a very good record, Archbishop Chapelle was seventh.

All four teams comprise District 9-5A and all four are in action, opposing each other this evening.

In Lakeview, John Curtis battles Mount Carmel at 6:15 p.m. The Cubs (13-6) have lost two straight, falling most recently to Houma Christian 49-34 on Saturday.

The Patriots (19-1) downed Cabrini 51-28 Saturday and have won 13 straight games. Curtis lost 44-43 to McKinley on Dec. 1 in the St. Michael the Archangel Tournament.

In Metairie, Archbishop Chapelle (16-7) entertains Dominican (22-2) at 6 p.m. Dominican downed the Chipmunks in the Division I quarterfinals a year ago before losing to John Curtis in the semifinals. Earlier this season, Dominican downed Chapelle 26-11 at Dominican on Nov. 21.

Chapelle has won four straight games while Dominican had a 14-game win streak snapped at St. Katharine Drexel on Jan. 13, losing 47-32. Dominican won the silver bracket of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic earlier this season, beating Mount Carmel 36-32 in the final on Jan. 6.
