Basketball: Country Day Tournament opens today with five returning state champions

It is one of the best tournaments in Louisiana annually.

The Country Day Tournament opens today in Metairie with five returning state champions highlighting the 16-team field.

In the opener, John Curtis Christian (4-7) battles the top-ranked team in the Division I power rankings in St. Paul’s (9-1) at 2:30 p.m. The Wolves have won eight straight games.

Ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest MaxPreps national rankings, unbeaten Riverside (10-0) takes on solid Hahnville (9-2) at 4 p.m. The Tigers have won three straight.

At 5:30 p.m. Archbishop Rummel (8-2) faces Catholic of Baton Rouge (8-2) in a good matchup while defending Division V state champion Crescent City Christian (9-11) battles Karr (5-4).

At 7 p.m., McDonogh 35 (7-5) squares off with always tough St. Thomas More (6-4) while defending Division III state champion Country Day (6-3) meets Northshore (9-3). The Panthers have won six straight games.

In the finale, defending Division II state champion De La Salle (6-4) takes on Landry-Walker (8-3) at 8:30 p.m.

Defending Division I state champion Scotlandville (9-2) will take on St. Charles Catholic (5-3) Thursday in the final opening round matchup. The improved Comets have won five straight games.
