Basketball: Christ Episcopal and Hammond boys win, Ponchatoula girls roll Thursday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Friday, Jan. 14

A young program continues to grow in positive fashion.

Christ Episcopal went on the road and won at Ascension Christian 59-47.

The Wildcats took a 15-7 lead after one quarter and expanded the edge go 28-11 at halftime. The Lions cut the deficit to 37-29 going to the fourth quarter but could get no closer.

Bennett Briggs was brilliant for Christ Episcopal, pumping in 34 points, including 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Sander McComiskey scored 11 points and Ethan Tape had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Christ Episcopal (10-8) returns to action at First Baptist Christian in Slidell at 6:15 p.m. this evening while Ascension Christian (7-9) also plays tonight, hosting Morgan City at 6:30 p.m.

In District 6-5A, Hammond defeated Covington 62-45 at home.

Hammond jumped all over the Lions early, taking a 17-2 lead after one quarter. It was 33-15 at halftime and it was 48-35 going to the final quarter.

Junior Jahiem Johnson led the Tornadoes with 21 points while junior Damarion Milton had 15 points. Senior Devin Daniels added 12 points and three blocks.

Hammond (14-6, 2-3) venture out of district at John Ehret Saturday at 4 p.m. while the Lions (5-13, 0-4) lost their 10th straight game and will return to district play next Tuesday night at Slidell.

In a District 6-5A showdown for first place, Ponchatoula made a statement with a convincing 87-45 home win over Northshore.

It was close for one quarter with the Green leading 13-12 after one period but Ponchatoula exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Northshore 23-6 to take a 36-18 halftime lead. The run continued in the third quarter with Ponchatoula outscoring the Lady Panthers 30-13 to take a commanding 66-31 lead into the final period.

Tulane signee Jaylee Womack shined once again, pumping in 30 points, six rebounds and five steals while Taylor Jackson scored 23 points with five rebounds and three steals. Libby Thompson added 16 points, including four 3-pointers with 10 rebounds and five assists. The Green Wave converted 16-of-19 free throw attempts.

Tierra Sylvas topped the Lady Panthers with 13 points, Mackenzie Novak scored 12 points and Tierra Tillison had 10 points.

Ponchatoula (19-2, 4-0) returns to action tonight, hosting Slidell at 6 p.m. while Northshore (16-6, 4-1) will host Hammond next Tuesday night.
