NEW ORLEANS – The Carver Rams showed razor-sharp focus for their home opener against the Slidell Tigers, cruising to a 79-44 victory Wednesday night.

Led by the Texas A&M signee Solomon Washington, the Rams’ overwhelmed Slidell with defensive stops, solid rebounding and transition points.

Washington, the 6-foot-7 phenom, led all scorers with 15 points with six rebounds, four blocks and three steals. The Rams complemented their star with smothering defense that kept the Tigers off balance most of the night.

“We just wanted to focus on the small principles on the defensive end,” said Carver Coach Nathaniel Roche. “Being on the help side, good boxing out position, taking care the basketball, running our transitional offense and half court.”

This was a significant win for the Rams, who dropped games to both Liberty and Newman in exhibition play.

Carver (1-0) shot 15-for-29 in the first half and scored the first 11 points of the ball game on the way to a 19-2 lead ending the first quarter. The Rams led 42-13 at the half.

A pair of seniors enjoyed solid nights for the victors offensively. Willie Anderson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Raymond Evans added 10 points and four rebounds while Dorian Finisher added nine points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

“They set the tone early in the game,” said Roche. “Solomon Washington being able to catch the ball around rim finishing strong, Dorian Finisher getting others involved and being unselfish that’s what it will take for us to go far.”

Anderson thrilled the home fans with a one-handed thunderous jam down the lane.

“It’s a big year for us all,” said Roche. “We just trying to absorb the pressure. We understand the expectations and for this team, this group. We just to keep building brick-by-brick.”

With the leadership and talent the Rams boasts in their lineup, Roche’s team has the look of a favorite to win the Class 4A state title.

Slidell (0-2) will play at Crescent City Christian Friday.
