Basketball: Carroll, Bennett reach milestones for Chapelle, Salmen; St. Aug clinches tie for district crown
Area Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Feb. 11
It was a special Friday night for Archbishop Chapelle and its star player.
The Chipmunks defeated St. Mary’s Academy 43-24.
Baylie Carroll scored 15 points to lead Chapelle and she reached a milestone, scoring the 2,000th point of her illustrious career.
The team reached a milestone as well, winning its 20th game as Chapelle improved to 20-12 on the season.
Salmen clinched a tie for the District 8-4A championship, clobbering Franklinton 74-10.
Salmen (16-14, 9-3) finished in a tie with Lakeshore for the title. The Titans swept the Spartans and will represent the district as a first place team by virtue of sweeping Salmen.
Junior Destiny Bennett scored her 1,000th career point in the win as she was simply phenomenal, scoring 46 points for the Spartans. Sophomore Zoe Nastasia added 10 points.
“It was a very exciting time,” Bennett said. “We started off extremely slow. Coach (Daryl) Thomas had to take our starting five out to focus on the task at hand. When we started playing as a team, nothing was going to stop us. When I started getting close to 1,000 points, Coach told me I was not alone in this journey. He told me to just play your game and use your teammates.”
Thomas was thrilled with the win and thrilled for Bennett.
“It is a big achievement for anyone to score 1,000 points,” Thomas said. “Most people do it in their senior year but Destiny did it as a junior. The district title was a tough one to grasp this year and sharing it with Lakeshore, who will represent the league as a first-place team. We are still in the rebuilding process but we are fortunate to have athletic girls who are willing to work hard and get better.”
In boys action, St. Augustine remained on top in District 9-5A with a 56-46 win over Archbishop Rummel at St. Mary’s Academy.
With the win, the Purple Knights clinched at least a tie for the Catholic League crown with two games to play.
The Raiders jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one quarter before St. Augustine dominated the second quarter to take a 23-19 halftime lead. The Purple Knights led 35-29 going to the fourth quarter.
Josh Jackson led the way with 19 points while Humbert Caliste had 15 points for the Purple Knights.
Darrius Davis topped Rummel with 16 points while Kendrick Joseph scored eight points.
St. Augustine (17-14, 7-2) will play at Holy Cross Thursday night with a chance to win the district title in outright fashion.
Rummel (19-10, 5-5) will host John Curtis Christian Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Patriots (21-9, 6-4) are the only team with a chance to catch St. Augustine. The Patriots whipped Karr 53-31 Friday night and will play at Helen Cox today at 6 p.m.
