Basketball: Bonnabel wins district, Newman beats Hannan, Shaw edges De La Salle

Revenge is always sweet.

That is especially true when it comes against your most heated rival.

After falling 60-51 to East Jefferson on Jan. 12 at The Bear Trap in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com, Bonnnabel was loaded for bear Saturday evening.

The Bruins broke open a close game, closing the game on an 11-0 run in a 52-38 victory to win the District 8-5A crown. Bonnabel held East Jefferson to just six points in the final quarter.

East Jefferson led 23-19 at halftime but the second half went the way of the Bruins.

Louisiana Tech signee Will Allen led the way with 18 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks while guard Theo Johnson had 13 points, nine assists and eightrebounds. Benard Hubbard, who made four 3-pointers in a win at Chalmette Friday night, continued his hot shooting with a trio of 3-pointers Saturday, scoring 11 points and added four steals.

Arthur Oliver had 10 points and five assists, Chris Flippin finished with eight points and eight rebounds and three blocks, Molik Reese had eight points and five rebounds and Tre Knighton finished with eight points and four rebounds for East Jefferson.

The Bruins have won District 8-5A three straight years, going unbeaten in district play each season.

Bonnabel (19-5, 4-0) will close its regular season at Karr Thursday at 7 p.m. while East Jefferson (17-9, 4-2) is done until the playoffs.

Newman edged Archbishop Hannan 60-56 in a good non-district matchup uptown.

Sophomore Chris Lockett led the Greenies with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while Canin Jefferson had 15 points, eight assists and two steals.

Newman (17-6) closes out its regular season Monday night at De La Salle at 7 p.m. in a game that you can watch live at CrescentCitySports.com while the Hawks (21-8) saw their 10-game win streak end. Hannan will play at Northlake Christian at 6 p.m. Monday.

Archbishop Shaw edged De La Salle 54-53 in a thriller Saturday night.

Rodney Phillips tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer to provide the margin of victory. Phillips finished with six points.

It was close and back-and-forth throughout.

De La Salle led 17-11 after one quarter before Shaw rallied to take a 26-25 halftime lead. The Cavaliers led 39-34 going to the final quarter before the Eagles rallied for the victory.

Isaiah Crawford led Shaw with 22 points while Kenneth Taylor finished with nine points. Kam Johnson had seven points and six assists.

The Eagles completed their regular season 17-8 while De La Salle fell to 10-6 with the loss.
