Basketball: Bonnabel, McDonogh 35, Sophie B. Wright join hosts in St. Aug Tournament semis

It will be Bonnabel against St. Augustine and McDonogh 35 against Sophie B. Wright in the semifinals of the St. Augustine Purple Knight Tournament at Watson Jones Gymnasium this evening.

The Bruins made it seven straight wins, advancing with a 67-57 victory over District 8-5A rival West Jefferson.

Bonnabel led 18-15 after one quarter and 30-25 at halftime.

Senior guard T.J. Collins led the way with 18 points for the Bruins, Will Allen had 15 points and junior Roderick Hackett added 14 points.

Bonnabel (13-3) will take on host St. Augustine (9-6) at 7 p.m. tonight in the semifinals. The Buccaneers (6-9) will play Chalmette today at 5:30 p.m. in a consolation game.

The Purple Knights advanced with a 51-40 victory over Chalmette. The Owls (4-13) will play West Jefferson at 5:30 this evening in a consolation game.

Sophie B. Wright advanced with its fifth straight win, a hard fought 55-46 victory over Karr. The game was close throughout but the Warriors outscored Karr 16-10 in the final period to score the victory

Charlie Russell led Sophie B. Wright (14-3) with 22 points, Gregory Hammond had 11 and center Prince Campbell, playing in his first game since transferring back to Louisiana from Texas, had 11 points. Two-sport star Skylar Perry led Karr (9-6) with 14 points while Mark Bowie had 10 points.

The Warriors advance to battle McDonogh 35 in the semifinals tonight at 8:30 p.m. The Cougars will face arch-rival Landry-Walker at 4 p.m. on a consolation game today.

McDonogh 35 downed the Chargin’ Bucs 56-52 in an overtime thriller. Landry-Walker led 22-16 at halftime before the Roneagles rallied to force overtime.

Kendrick Dandy led the Roneagles (10-8) with 24 points, two-sport star Joe Foucha had 14 points and Antonio Warren contributed 11 for McDonogh 35. Troy Cargo topped Landry-Walker (11-5) with 12 points while Dywan Griffin added nine points.
