Basketball: Ben Franklin girls win district title; Sarah Reed, McMain boys victorious Thursday

Area Prep Basketball Report for Friday, Feb. 3

On Senior Night, Ben Franklin celebrated its veteran players by celebrating a district championship.

The Lady Falcons easily dismissed McDonogh 35 by a 56-25 margin at home Thursday to win the District 11-4A championship outright.

Senior Petra Trumbach led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Senior Katelyn Jackson had 12 points and three steals, senior Alivia Benetrix scored 12 points and had three steals and senior Cydney Gauf had seven points and eight assists.

Winners of eight straight games, Ben Franklin (24-5, 6-0) returns to action Monday, hosting Karr at 5:30 p.m.

The Roneagles (7-17, 1-5) will play next Tuesday at South Plaquemines.

In boys action, Sarah T. Reed handled Haynes Academy 60-28 at home in a District 9-3A contest.

It was the third straight win for the Olympians.

Ky’lil Wilson led Sarah Reed with 19 points while Kyle Thornton added 14 points.

The Olympians (14-12, 3-2) return to action tonight at M.L. King Charter at 6 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets (7-12, 0-4) will host New Orleans Science & Math Tuesday at 5:30 in district play.

McMain snapped a four-game losing streak with a 75-57 victory at Helen Cox.

Donte Briggs led the Mustangs with 20 points, three assists and two rebounds while Lionel Larvadain had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.

McMain (8-5) returns to District 9-4A play tonight at home against Riverdale at 6:30 p.m.

The Cougars (5-21) will play tonight at New Orleans Military & Maritime at 6 p.m. in a District 10-4A contest.
