Basketball: Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO and Tournament of Champions events set to begin plus Tuesday results

Area Prep Basketball Report for Wednesday, Dec. 4

Two significant tournaments with excellent teams open today in the New Orleans area.

The 65th Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament opens at four locations, including Archbishop Shaw, De La Salle, Holy Cross, Jesuit with 16 teams participating. Jesuit is the defending champion and the Blue Jays host Central Lafourche at 6 p.m. Holy Cross, St. Augustine and De La Salle are other top teams to watch.

The Tournament of Champions opens at two locations, including Sophie B. Wright and Crescent City Christian. Both teams at host sites are coming off of outstanding seasons while Riverside Academy, Country Day, Jehovah-Jireh and St. Thomas More are tradionally good programs as well.

Tuesday evening, Slidell made the short trek to crosstown rival Salmen and the Tigers defeated the Spartans 70-61.

Juniors Lorenzo Caldwell and Cooper Rachow led the way for Slidell with 22 and 19 points, respectively. Rachow added eight rebounds and two steals.

Slidell (3-3) will host Bonnabel next Tuesday at 7 p.m. while Salmen (2-3) returns to action tonight, hosting Warren Easton at 7 p.m.

Brother Martin remained rebounded from a loss out-of-state with an 85-57 victory over Terrebonne at Conlin Gymnasium.

The Crusaders led 20-19 after one quarter but grew the lead by 42-29 by halftime. It was 64-47 after three quarters.

Once again, Army commit T.J. Small led the way with another brilliant performance. This time, Small scored 37 points with eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Brock Ranlett had 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. DeLord had 11 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Brother Martin (6-1) returns to action Saturday at Morris Jeff Community School at 6 p.m. while Terrebonne (3-2) will play tonight at Vandebilt Catholic at 6 p.m.

Chalmette handled South Plaquemines 68-39 at home.

The Owls led 16-10 after one quarter and 33-20 by halftime. The Owls blew it open in the third quarter, taking a 56-25 lead into the final quarter.

Frank Ceaser led Chalmette with 18 points and five assists, Jahlil Humble had 13 points and eight rebounds and Patrick Allen finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Chalmette (5-1) will host Pearl River Thursday while the Hurricanes (1-3) will host Belle Chasse Friday.

In girls action, Belle Chasse defeated Grace King 45-16 at home.

The Cardinals blew it open early, taking a whopping 20-2 lead after one quarter and coasted to victory. It was 25-3 at halftime and 36-4 after three quarters.

Freshman Nya St. Cyr led the Cardinals with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists while junior Janice Jorden had 13 points and eight steals.

Belle Chasse (3-1) will play at East Jefferson next Tuesday at 5 p.m. while the Fighting Irish (0-5) is at Lusher Charter Friday at 5:30 p.m.
